The University of Maiduguri in Borno State has been renamed after the late former president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
On Thursday evening, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the late Nigerian leader’s successor, renamed the university after him. July 17, 2025

At a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held today at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the president himself made the announcement.

Former President Buhari was buried Tuesday in his birthplace of Daura, Katsina State, after passing away on July 13, 2025, at a London facility.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, 15th of July 2025, as a public holiday in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former president Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, passed away on the 13th of July 2025 in a clinic in London and has been transported back to Nigeria for proper burial arrangements in an Islamic manner.

For President Muhammadu Buhari is dead. 

Bashir Ahmad, his former aide, announced the passing of the former president on X.

He wrote, “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.

May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Former President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985, was known for his stance on anti-corruption and efforts to stabilize the economy.

The family is anticipated to provide more information about the funeral plans in compliance with Islamic customs.
